BRING YOUR DREAMS
TO LIFE

Creative portrait photography, or conceptual portraiture, is when a client has a vision or idea and would like me to use my creative vision to create a unique, one of a kind image or set of images for them. These images are created with color, light, props, make up, styling, and sometimes compositing different images to create one final fine art image. The sky is not even the limit here. If you can think it, we will brainstorm the process and we will create it. It takes a fair amount of preparation but it’s worth it in the end to have a work of art for you to truly love. FYI: None of the people in these images are professional models. They are people from all walks of life that want to get creative.

I’ve always been drawn to this photography style. Interestingly, for the first 20 years of my career, I was primarily a product photographer, focusing on cosmetics, fragrance, jewelry, and off-figure fashion. My role involved not only capturing products but also designing sets according to an art director’s theme. I became adept at using Photoshop creatively to overcome limitations in props and expenses. Now, as a portraiture specialist, my background in styling sets fuels my exploration of creative whims. Despite my tomboyish exterior, inside, I dream of a world filled with beauty, ethereality, playfulness, edginess, creativity, nature, and constant dreaminess. Transforming a client’s vision into reality using my unique skill set is my favorite aspect of photography.

Creative Portrait Photography, or Conceptual Portraiture, brings the client's creative vision to life.

HOW DOES A CONCEPTUAL
PORTRAIT SESSION WORK?

Christina Kramer New York. Long Island portrait photographer specializing in magazine style portraits, maternity, headshots, boudoir, and creative portrait photography.

1. Concept exploration

In the initial phase, we explore your comfort with my concept creation. Together, we bring your vision to life, often based on themes like Hollywood lighting, fairytales, or specific inspirations. Clients share digital screenshots for reference, fostering creativity for dancers of any genre. Our collaborative session covers the concept’s purpose, whether it’s for wall art, advertising, or a book series. We discuss photography needs, wardrobe, props, backgrounds, meaningful elements, hairstyles, makeup, and more, aiming for an ideal image in our created world.

2. BEHIND THE SCENES

We will create mood boards from your inspiration, sharing them with you, the makeup professional, hair stylist, my photo assistant, and everyone on set for your portrait experience. This ensures the entire team is aligned for your shoot day. While I have various props and cost-effective design abilities, any additional props needed will be the client’s responsibility. There won’t be any surprises—we’ll be in lockstep throughout the process.

A sample mood board, like the one in this image block, will be displayed in the studio for reference during the shoot. These boards help the team grasp the mood and intent for the images, guiding our creative process without imitation; we aim to create based on the inspiration provided.

3. THE DAY OF THE SHOOT

The actual creative portrait photography session is designed to be tons of fun! You simply arrive at the studio with your wardrobe, a clean face, and clean dry hair (preferably washed the night before). From there, I’ll have already set up much of your environment, and when you step into character, the magic begins! If we’re in the studio, I’ll be shooting tethered to a computer, allowing you to see the images in real time on a 60″ display right from the set. This provides an excellent opportunity for micro adjustments, ensuring we strive for a perfect image or as close to your vision as possible. Whether it’s a single image or a composite of several, I’ll guide you through the process to ensure we capture all the shots needed for your final image.

4. Viewing and ordering

Three weeks after your session, we’ll arrange an in-person viewing or a Zoom session for you to see your final image(s). At this point, you have one opportunity to request any changes or edits. If you’re satisfied with the presented image, it goes to print, and we’ll notify you upon the arrival of your wall art. In case of additional edits beyond our initial discussions, each edit costs $100, and the final approval process takes one week before printing. Although such instances are rare, it’s always an option. Your satisfaction is crucial; you must love your image before it goes to print.

These images serve as a form of self-expression for individuals of all ages, sizes, moods, and styles. Whether it’s serious or funny, dreamy or dark, if you envision it, I can help bring it to life. I find inspiration in this work and genuinely love these collaborative creations.
